Scope and Content Vaulted tower windmill, Ballantrae, Ayrshire Ballantrae windmill belongs to a group of mills believed to be the earliest in Scotland. They date from the around the late 17th century, and share similar dimensions and construction features. They can be found as far south as the Mull of Galloway, and as far north as Moray. This view shows the mill, which is on a hill above the sea shore, with its slender tower, probably originally housing a single pair of millstones. The remains of the vault which extended from the base of the mill is in the foreground. The vault gave access to the mill while the sails were turning. Mills like this one seem to have fallen out of use in the late 18th and early 19th century. This one is close to the sea shore, so may well have had a maritime trade. The masonry of which it is built is very similar to that of mills of this type at Logan, Wigtownshire, and Balgone Barns, East Lothian. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
