Scope and Content Vaulted tower windmill, Logan, Wigtownshire Logan windmill was built in the late 17th century on natural mound. It stands 7.6m high, has an internal diameter of 3m, and its walls are almost a metre thick. Entry is by a ground-level doorway, and there is a vaulted chamber on one side of the tower. The structure is built from whinstone rubble and boulders gathered from the beach. This view shows the mill with its slender tower, probably originally housing a single pair of millstones. The arch from which the vault extended from the base of the mill is on the right. The castellations were added to turn it into a picturesque landscape feature. Mills like this one seem to have fallen out of use in the late 18th and early 19th century. This one is close to the sea shore, by a small natural harbour, so may well have had a maritime trade. The masonry of which it is built is very similar to that of mills of this type at Ballantrae, Ayrshire, and Balgone Barns, East Lothian. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
