Scope and Content Agricultural remains, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh Although it lies at the centre of a capital city, Holyrood Park is a wonderful example of a fossilised rural landscape. Remains of early agriculture abound in the Park, as here, at Powderhouse Corner and, just outside, in Prestonfield Golf Course. These curving swathes of rig and furrow were formed by the plough teams as they turned over the soil along the same course, year after year. In contrast to the peace of today, ripening crops and farm lands would have been seen here in the 16th century. The short grass at Powderhouse Corner also highlights a couple of field enclosures and possible building remains. Aerial photography such as this is a good way to see remains where little is preserved or visible on the ground. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
