Scope and Content Gravestone of Patrick Laurence, Keithhall and Kinkell Parish Church and Graveyard, Perth & Kinross This gravestone bears a large winged soul at the top, symbol of the soul ascending to Heaven after death. The sides of the stone are decorated with double-ended torches, symbolising life (the flame) and death (the extinguished fire). Two roses symbolise love and rebirth, whilst the house-shaped panel (centre) contains malt-shovels, fire-hooks and a mash-oar, together with what may be a grain measure or bundle of barley. Below can be seen two millstones and a 'mouline' (the metal brace which supports the millstone). A ribbon inscribed: 'MEMENTO MORI' (remember you must die) separates a row of death emblems (coffin, skull, crossed bones and an hourglass) at the base of the stone. The complex emblems on this monument symbolise the miller's life and his hopes for Resurrection. The main part of the stone shows the tools he used in life, presented with great pride like heraldic symbols. The death emblems at the base of the stone warn those still alive that death awaits us all, and the soul and flowers at the top of the stone show his spirit ascending to eternal life and rebirth through faith. This gravestone commemorates Patrick Laurence, who died in 1782. This fine memorial features extremely detailed depictions of millstones and maltster's equipment, reflecting the high status of millers within their communities. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
