Scope and Content Gravestone of the two wives of Peter McFarland, Logierait Parish Church and Churchyard, Perth & Kinross This monument features an ornamental pediment carved with a winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death) and rosettes, emblems of rebirth. The panel beneath the pediment is reminiscent of pieced fretwork fashionable in furniture of the period. The main face of the stone features and armorial panel carved with the sock and coulter (metal parts) of a plough, the emblem of a farmer. At the base of the stone is a scene showing Adam and Eve next to the Tree of Knowledge. The serpent, coiled around the tree trunk, is tempting Eve with an apple. The Biblical story of Adam and Eve represents the Fall of Man, and the need to be obedient to God. The story also suggests the coming of Christ (sometimes called the 'second Adam') and redemption. This gravestone commemorates the two wives of Peter Mcfarland, Margaret McLaren and Ann Stueart, who died between 1781 and 1789. It is inscribed: '1781/P M A S/ERECTED BY PTER McFARLAND IN/PITNACREE IN MEMORY OF HIS/FIRST SPOUSE MARGARET McLAREN/ANN STUEART HIS SECOND SPOUSE/THE LATTER OF WHOM DEPARTED THIS/LIFE 1st DECEMBER 1789 AND AGE/28 YEARS/THEY SHALL TO THE DUCT RETURN/EARTH AS IT WAS AND THE SPIRIT/AND THE SPIRIT SHALL RETURN UNTO GOD'.
