Scope and Content Gravestone of Thomas Rutherford, St Serf's Church and Churchyard, Dunning, Perth & Kinross This very early gravestone is primitively cut with a head in profile. It may be intended to be a portrait of the deceased. The inscription describes how the deceased has been imprisoned (punished) for the sin of the first man, Adam, who disobeyed God. It goes on to reveal the hope that Thomas will be set free by the 'second Adam', Christ, by whose sacrifice all believers gain eternal life. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates Thomas Rutherford, who died in 1623. It is inscribed: '1623/T R/THOMAS RUTHERFORD/LAYS HEAR WITHIN/IMPRISONED FOR ADAMS/SIN BVT TO BE SET BY/THE SECOND ADAM FREE'.
