Scope and Content Great Hall, Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire, from west This photograph shows the interior of the great hall, on the first floor of the old tower. The fireplace dates from the 16th century, and the large windows were inserted in the 18th century. Over the fireplace is a portrait of General Alexander Mackenzie Fraser (1758-1809), the laird of Inverallochy. In the roof above the hall is a small chamber known as the 'laird's lug'. This room was constructed around 1617 and was probably used to store valuables and important papers. However, it has also been suggested that the room was used to eavesdrop on conversations in the great hall. Castle Fraser is situated 26km west of Aberdeenshire, and has been owned by The National Trust for Scotland since 1976. The oldest part of the castle dates from the 15th century, when King James II (1437-60) granted the lands of Muchall and Stoneywood to Thomas Fraser (d.1475). Over the centuries, generations of the Fraser family added to the castle, creating a fine Renaissance building that is now open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
