Scope and Content Kellie Castle, Fife, from south This photograph, taken in 1966, shows the south front of the castle. The tower on the right was the second part of the castle to be built, in 1573. The L-plan block to its left was built between 1603 and 1606, forming a T-plan castle. The roof of the north tower, built in the late 15th or early 16th century, can just be seen above the roof of the central bock. In the 1870s, the castle was leased by Professor James Allan Lorimer, who began restoring the castle. This work was continued by his son and grandson, the sculptor Hew Lorimer (1907-93), who bought the castle. In 1970, Hew Lorimer sold the castle to The National Trust for Scotland, and it is now open to the public. Kellie Castle dates from the 15th and 16th century, although the history of the estate can be traced back to the 12th century. The castle was built when the estate was owned by the Oliphant family. Built of local sandstone, the castle was restored in the late 19th and 20th centuries by the Lorimer family, including Robert Lorimer (1856-1929), the eminent architect.
