Scope and Content Bell-cote, Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire In 1984, the castle was purchased by The National Trust for Scotland, and in 1986 a large restoration programme began. This photograph was taken in 1988, and shows a detail of a bell-cote, situated on the south wing, at the centre of the roof. It may have been built in around 1899, at the same time as the clock tower was constructed for Alexander Forbes Leith (1847-1925). During the restoration work, the scaffolding surrounding the building allowed a good opportunity to take photographs of previously inaccessible details on the building, like this bell-cote. Fyvie Castle dates from the 13th century, and in 1211 or 1214 was visited by King William the Lion (1165-1214). The original, quadrangular-plan castle passed out of royal hands in 1380, and now consists of two main wings, with fine Scots Baronial detailing. Six different families successively had ownership of the castle, most altering the appearance of the building in some way. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
