Scope and Content End panel of table tomb commemorating the family of Alex Hislop, St Andrew's Church, Neidpath Road, Peebles, Scottish Borders This view shows the end panel of the table tomb which, like most examples in this churchyard, displays a winged soul, representing the soul's ascent to Heaven. The style of carving is similar to several other monuments in this churchyard, and the winged soul displays the unusual hairstyle and kite-shaped feathers which may be the work of a single stonemason, working in Peebles from the late 18th century until the 1830s. This monument was probably erected in 1801 when Alex Hislop, the head of the family, died. Post-Reformation gravestones like this are an important part of the nation's heritage, documenting the lives of ordinary Scots who would otherwise leave little record of their existence. Through the decorative carvings and inscriptions it is possible to learn more about the lives of these people, what they did for a living and, in this case, even the clothes they wore and what they looked like. This monument commemorates the family of Alex Hislop, a merchant, who died in 1801 aged 76. Also interred here are his wife Margaret Hendrie, who died in 1765 aged 38, and several of their children. The inscription reads: 'Alex Hislop merchant in/Peebles died June 1801 aged 76/Margaret Hendrie his wife died/22nd March 1765 aged 38 and their/children John, Robert, Alex, Jean/Margaret, Katherine and Janet'.
