SC 801798
Description Detail of headstone for Thomas Hislop, 1785.
Collection Papers of Betty Willsher, historian, St Andrews, Scotland
Catalogue Number SC 801798
Category On-line Digital Images
Scope and Content Detail of mural monument to Thomas Hislop, Martha McPhin and Agnes and John Hislop, Kilmalieu Graveyard, Inveraray, Argyll & Bute This shows a panel at the base of the monument carved with a winged skull. Its realistic appearance and finely-carved bat's wings add to the viewer's sense of horror at this depiction of Death 'on swift wings'. This macabre flying Death emblem is intended to provoke the viewer into considering their own mortality. At the top of the monument a more hopeful and pleasant image of a winged soul is provided to show that the virtuous soul will fly to Heaven after death. This mural (wall-mounted) monument commemorates Thomas Hislop, who died in 1785, and his wife Martha McPhin, who died in 1810. Also commemorated are their children, Agnes and John.
