Scope and Content Detail of the table tomb of Robert Bary, Kinloss Abbey and Burial-Ground, Moray This side of the sunken table tomb features a 'Green Man'. He is shown with a bearded face, and a curiously half-smiling mouth. Leafy fronds spring from the top of a crown of leaves, and curl round his face. 'Green men' are ancient symbols of fertility and rebirth, and are occasionally to be found on gravestones. The image of the Green Man (usually a grotesque face sprouting leaves) probably originated from the tree and nature spirits worshipped by early peoples, but later became common decorations in medieval church architecture. This table tomb commemorates Robert Bary. It is inscribed: 'HERE LYES ANE HONEST MAN/CALDED ROBERT BARY WHO/DYED ANNO 1682. This stone is one of several in this graveyard which carry the inscription 'Here lyes ane honest man' and depictions of the 'Green Man'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
