Scope and Content Gravestone of 'J E', Old Parish Church, Boyndie, Aberdeenshire This shows the west face of the gravestone, with its portrait of the deceased man. He stands in his fashionable long coat, with incised buttons and pockets. In the centre of his coat is a round object, which may be some sort of badge. He wears his hair in curls and holds a book (presumably the Bible) as evidence of his piety. His legs appear almost skeletal, but this is probably due to the weathering of the stone surface. Many gravestones, like this example, record interesting contemporary costume details. People are always portrayed in their finest clothes, as this suggests the wealth and standing of the deceased in the community. This gravestone commemorates 'J E' (no further details available), and probably dates from the mid-18th century. It is one of several in the churchyard which feature similar scenes of angels of the Resurrection. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
