Scope and Content Gravestone of James Wood and Margrit Gairden, St Mary's Church and Burial-Ground, Church Street, Banff, Aberdeenshire This gravestone features a large winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death) as its pediment (shaped top part of the stone). The soul has hair arranged like a halo, and incised feather details on its wings. Some words within the inscription flow from one line to the next. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates James Wood and Margrit Gairden. There is no date recorded on the stone, but it probably dates from the early 18th century. It is inscribed: 'HERE IS THE RASTI/NG PLACE OF IAM/ES WOOD MERCH/ANT IN BANFF/AND MARGRIT GAIRDEN HIS SP/OUSE AND THEIR/CHILDREN'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
