Scope and Content Gravestone of Alexr M Nuick, Kilmalieu Graveyard, Inveraray, Argyll & Bute This gravestone features a Classical-style façade with fluted pilasters on a stepped base and a deeply-moulded pediment. Within the pediment is a pair of crossed spades which relate to the trade of gardener. The youthful winged soul below symbolises the ascension of the spirit to Heaven after death. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates Alexr M Nuick, who died in 1748. It is inscribed: Interrd here/Alexr M Nuick/Burgess in Inver/who died 8th June 1748/Erected by/John M Nuick his/son Gardner in Inver/Jean M .../his spouse 17...'.
