Scope and Content Rear elevation of Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway, from south-west To the rear of the house is a very fine garden which overlooks the River Dee. It was created by Hornel and his sister, Elizabeth (d.1950). The pineapple gate finials date from the late 17th or 18th century, along with the cast-iron gates. The bow extension, behind the tree at the right of the photograph, was built in the late 19th century, with large windows to overlook the garden and river. The gates and railings shown in this photograph separate the garden from the terrace which lies immediately to the rear of the house. To the extreme left of the picture, the studio extension, which was constructed for Hornel, can just be seen. Broughton House was built in the mid-18th century as the town house for the Murrays of Broughton. The house was subsequently added to over the following centuries. It is now a museum and art gallery, run by The National Trust for Scotland, holding work by the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933), who lived here from 1895 until his death.
