Scope and Content Ground-floor hall, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway This photograph shows the ground-floor hall, which is part of the mid-18th-century house. The furniture is antique, and includes a 17th-century court cupboard, seen here beside the grandfather clock. The court cupboard was designed for use in a dining room, to store and display plates, and for use as a serving table. The wooden panelling on the walls dates from the 19th century. The house is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and this room is thought to have changed little since Hornel occupied the house. In addition to collecting antiques, Hornel had a library of around 15,000 books. Broughton House, situated in Kirkcudbright High Street, was built in the mid-18th century as the town house for the Murrays of Broughton. In 1895 it was purchased by the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933), one of the 'Glasgow Boys'. Hornel was responsible for building a large studio and gallery addition, and also created a fine garden. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
