Scope and Content Interior, Wash House, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway This photograph shows the wash room in the lower ground floor. This room, with its rough stone walls and flagstone floor, may be one of those which incorporate fragments of the earlier house. Hornel was looked after by his sisters, but the uniform hanging on the wall shows that the family also employed staff. An old iron lies on the table, and a mangle can be seen at the rear of the room. Before his death, Hornel ensured that his house, garden and library would be made accessible to local people. A group of trustees carried out this wish, until the house was passed to The National Trust for Scotland. The house is now open to the public as a museum and art gallery. Broughton House was built in the mid-18th century as the town house for the Murrays of Broughton. It was built on the site of an earlier house, some parts of which may have survived in the basement rooms. In 1895, the house was purchased by the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933) who lived there until his death. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
