Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 801551

Copy of E 31002 CN

Scope and Content Garden, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway This photograph shows the long garden pond, which is overlooked by a statue of a crane (right). The seat on the left is made of cast-iron, and has a design of fern leaves. A wide range of ferns and water plants overhang the pond. The National Trust for Scotland now looks after the garden and house, and both are open to the public. This is in accordance with the wishes of Hornel, who opened the garden to local people during his lifetime. The artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1956) bought the 18th-century Broughton House in 1895, where he lived until his death. The two-acre garden at the rear of the house was designed and maintained by Hornel and his sister from about 1901. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
