Scope and Content Sundial on lawn, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway The garden is divided into a number of compartments, each with different styles. This photograph shows an area of lawn, with a sundial in the centre. The sundial is one of three in the garden, and dates from the late 17th or early 18th century. The trees and plants beyond the lawn are part of a Japanese garden that is designed around a pond. Broughton House and its associated gardens are open to the public, as they are cared for by The National Trust for Scotland. During his lifetime, Hornel made his garden available to visitors, and made provision that the practice be continued after his death. In 1895, the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933) purchased Broughton House in Kirkcudbright. The mid-18th-century house was first built as the town house for the Murrays of Broughton. Hornel was responsible for a number of changes, building a studio and gallery, and creating a fine garden to the rear of the house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
