Scope and Content Japanese water garden, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway This photograph shows part of the Japanese water garden that makes up a large part of the garden. Arranged around an irregularly-shaped pond, the garden was designed to be pleasing to the eye and a place to relax. Stepping stones have been placed next to the red-painted decorative bridge, and a path leads from here to a raised area of rockery. Hornel opened the garden to visitors during his lifetime, and made arrangements that the practice be continued after his death. The house and garden are now both in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and are open to the public. Broughton House is a mid-18th-century town house, which was built for the Murrays of Broughton. In 1895, it was bought by the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933), who had built onto the house, a number of additions including a studio and gallery. Hornel was also a keen gardener, and his designs for the garden were influenced by trips to the Far East. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
