Scope and Content Monument commemorating Walter Campbell, St Bride's Parish Church, Main Street, Bothwell, South Lanarkshire Built in marble, this Classically-inspired monument takes the form of an obelisk, topped by an urn, with two smaller obelisks on either side. The arms of the Campbells are flanked by palm fronds, a symbol of the Resurrection. During the 18th century, Classical architecture was one of the most popular designs for public buildings and private residences, and heavily influenced funerary architecture. In this case, the obelisk, an Egyptian style of monument (dedicated to the sun) is topped by a Greek urn. Situated within St Bride's Parish Church, this monument commemorates Walter Campbell, General Receiver of Customs in Scotland, who died in 1735 aged 33. The inscription reads: 'Here Lyes Interr'd the/Body of/WALTER CAMPBELL Esq/General Receiver of his/Majesty's Customs in/Scotland. Son to DANIEL CAMPBELL of/Shawfield Esq Who/Departed this Life the 30th/day of Ianuary 1735/in the 33rd year of his/Age'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
