Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Agnes [...], Walston Parish Church and Churchyard, South Lanarkshire An unusual scene occupies the centre of this stone, and appears to show a head emerging from the top of a coffin, possibly showing Agnes's body being resurrected on the Day of Judgement. Alternatively, this could be her soul rising to Heaven after death, vividly illustrated by the crossed bones beneath, while the hourglass on the right symbolises mortality. The rectangular object on the left could be a book, probably the Bible, an emblem of Agnes's belief in the Word of God. Post-Reformation gravestones like as this are an important part of the nation's heritage, documenting the lives of ordinary Scots who would otherwise leave little record of their existence. Through the decorative carvings and inscriptions it is possible to learn more about the lives of these people, what they did for a living and, in some cases, the clothes they wore and even what they looked like. This gravestone commemorates Agnes [...], who died in 1744. Unfortunately almost all of the inscription is now illegible. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
