Scope and Content Upper Hall, Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire The upper hall of the tower, shown in this photograph, has changed little since the time of construction in the late 13th century. The space would originally have been divided into two levels with a timber floor and the corbels along the wall show where this would have been. The tower was built with defence in mind, as the walls are very thick and windows small. This room would have been used as accommodation for the laird and his immediate family. The sleeping quarters would have been located on the timber floor in the upper section of the hall. Drum Castle was in the hands of the Irvine family from 1323 to 1976, after which it was placed into the care of The National Trust for Scotland. The castle is composed of three distinct parts: a medieval tower; Jacobean mansion; and a large Victorian extension. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
