Scope and Content Stirling Castle, Stirling, from south This view from the south, probably taken in the late 1950s, shows the Queen Anne Battery (1708-14) above the trees, with the forework above it, and the gatehouse to the right (c.1600-10). Above the forework are the palace in the centre (1540s), and the Great Hall to its right (c.1500). The oldest surviving part of the castle dates from the late-14th century, and the palace constructed by James V (seen here) is still largely intact. The Chapel Royal was added in 1594, and during the reign of Queen Anne the fortifications were upgraded. It remained in military use until the 1960s, and has since been much restored and opened to the public under the care of Historic Scotland. Stirling Castle is strategically situated on the best route by land between lowland and highland Scotland, and the rock on which it sits has probably been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was both fortress and royal palace, and has some of the best of both types of architecture in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
