Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Campbeltown Airfield, Argyll & Bute Identified here as being a civilian airfield ('Zivillandeplatz'), Campbeltown later became a military airstrip in 1941. Campbeltown was a small airfield with relatively little in the way of buildings. The Luftwaffe intelligence notes identify a single aircraft shed, built of wood, and a small cluster of flying control, accommodation and administration buildings. Six months after this Luftwaffe photograph was taken, Campbeltown was requisitioned by the Royal Navy, and by 1943 it acted as an overspill for the larger and more developed airfield at Macrihanish. Campbeltown Airfield closed in mid-1945. Contemporary descriptions suggest that Campbeltown was a fairly spartan airfield and only fitted out with the most basic of equipment. Taken during aerial reconnaissance by the Luftwaffe in September 1940, this photograph shows the airfield at Campbeltown. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
