Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Port Ellen Airfield, Islay, Argyll & Bute This aerial photograph shows Port Ellen Airfield before it was further upgraded later in 1941. As can be seen here, the airfield was relatively small, with few buildings and according to Luftwaffe intelligence, comprised an airport building (1), two flat-roofed accommodation blocks (2) and a fuel dump. Throughout World War II, Port Ellen lacked a defined role, other than being a landing strip for lost aircraft or those experiencing difficulties. In some cases the aircraft had missed other landing strips, while one aircraft touched down at Port Ellen with only five gallons of fuel left. Given its strategic value, being the only landing strip in the area, the airfield was upgraded and expanded throughout 1941, notably with a type of landing strip specially designed for wet or boggy ground. Following the end of World War II, the airfield continued in use as a civilian airport, running flights to Glasgow and Campbeltown, and it remains open today. Taken during aerial reconnaissance by the Luftwaffe in January 1941, this photograph shows an airfield at near Port Ellen on Islay. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
