SC 799510

Description Montrose Churchyard. Digital image of headstone, Isobell Mearns, 1812.

Catalogue Number SC 799510

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Gravestone of Isobel, Robert, Robert and Jessie Mearns, Montrose Old Parish Church and Burial Ground, High Street, Montrose, Angus This gravestone was built to commemorate the family of a shipmaster. The term could mean that the man either owned ships, or was himself a sea captain. The stone features a sculptured roundel of rope tied in a reef knot, enclosing a carefully-carved image of a barque ship. Tiny details of the rigging, rope ladders and furled sails are included. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates Isobel Mearns, who died in 1811, Jessie Mearns, who died in 1836, Robert Mearns, who died in 1852, and Robert Mearns, who died in 1841. It is inscribed: '1812/Erected by Robert Merns shipmaster/in Montrose in memory of his wife/Isobel Mearns who died 8 March/1811 aged 32'...(further entries added later).
