Description Monikie Churchyard. Digital image of headstone, The Ribson Children, 1765.

Catalogue Number SC 799503

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Gravestone of Alexander, Elspeth, Edward and John Gibson, Parish Church and Burial Ground, Monikie, Angus This shows the gravestone with its ornate border patterned with rows of leaves and diamonds. At the top of the stone is a winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death), with curving wings and a feathery bib below its smiling face. Below the soul image is a fine sculpture of a weaver at work at a loom. He wears a curled periwig, and buttoned coat and waistcoat, and holds a book upon which is inscribed the text: 'CHARITY IS GOOD TO LEARN'. This highly detailed stone is one of several in this churchyard which commemorate weavers and their families. It clearly shows the cloth being woven and details such as the cords which support the frame, the shuttle which the weaver passes between the threads, and tiny costume details such as the rows of buttons on the weaver's coat. This gravestone commemorates Alexander, Elspeth, Edward and John Gibson. It is inscribed: '1765/This stone is Erected By/Edward Gibson Tennant in/Lies of Smithfield & his Spouse/Anna Londie in Memory of their/Children Viz: Alexander, Elspeth/Edward & John Gibsons All Interrd/here/Her lyes our son into the dust/To us he loving was/And all his days he did inclin/To learn God's holy laws'.
