Scope and Content Gravestone of Margaret Bouer, Alexander Dick, Elizabeth Dick, Ann Arclay and James Dick, Parish Church and Burial Ground, Monikie, Angus This shows the west face of the gravestone with its 'egg-and-dart' patterned border with central palm frond (an emblem of the Resurrection) between two winged souls. These winged heads symbolise the spirit ascending to Heaven after death. Below the wavy, scroll-like panel of inscriptions is a ribbon inscribed 'REMEMBER DEATH', and a row of death emblems joined by a symbolic Cord of Life. These are (from left to right) a skull, coffin, hourglass and crossed bones. Death or mortality emblems on Scottish gravestones include coffins, 'deid bells', bones, skulls, sexton's (gravedigger's) tools, hourglasses and the scythe and dart (weapons of Death). When strung together on ribbons they may also represent trophies of Death, held by the Cord of Life. They were intended to remind the viewer of the power of death, and encourage the living to lead virtuous lives in order to ascend to Heaven after death. Many stones feature incised ribbons bearing the message 'Memento Mori', (remember you must die), to further reinforce this point. This is the gravestone of Margaret Bouer, who died in 1779, Alexander Dick, who died in 1748, Elizabeth Dick, who died in 1756, Ann Arclay, who died at the age of 36, two unidentified persons who died in 1776 and 1779 and James Dick, who died in 1780. It is inscribed: 'Erected by/James Dick taylor in/Monikie in memory of/his spouse Margt Bouer/who died 1779 aged 79 years/& their sons Aler died 1748/daughter Elizabeth who died/1756...died 1771.../1776...1779 also his spouse/Ann Arclay...36 years/The above named James Dick/who died 1780 interd here'.
