St Vigeans Churchyard. Headstone with little girl.

SC 799385

Description St Vigeans Churchyard. Headstone with little girl.

Collection Papers of Betty Willsher, historian, St Andrews, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 799385

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of AN 5414/1

Scope and Content Gravestone of [...] Spink', St Vigeans Parish Church and Churchyard, Angus This gravestone shows the deceased person, a young child wearing a long buttoned coat which flares out below the waist, shoes and stockings. The child holds an open Bible as a symbol of their piety. On each side of the child is a winged soul, (symbols of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death). The child stands on a cartouche filled with a complicated monogram and surrounded by leaves, seedpods, flowers (all emblems of rebirth) and two shuttles (emblems of the trade of the weaver). The child on this gravestone is wearing fashionable clothes of the mid-18th century, such as would be worn by a wealthy gentleman. Around his neck can be seen a twisted scarf, called a stock, another fashionable detail. Gravestones often reveal interesting costume details from the past, showing the 'best' clothes which people aspired to. This stone commemorates the young son of John Spink and Agnes [...]. The stone has been placed against a wall, and so any inscription on the reverse of the stone is not readable. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
