Scope and Content Gravestone of Robert Findlay, Church of Logie, Angus This gravestone features an ornate border of flowers and scrolls with a central decorative mask. Below a panel of inscribed initials are two winged souls, symbols of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death. The lower part of the stone features an armorial shield carved with further initials, and the sock and coulter (metal parts) of a plough, indicating that the deceased was a farmer. The rather gruesome verse on this stone reflects our ancestors' attitude towards death, and their belief in the reward of a Heavenly afterlife for the devout. Emblems of mortality like skulls, bones, gravedigger's tools and corpses were commonly placed on gravestones as a reminder to the living to live a virtuous life, as death is ever present. This gravestone commemorates Robert Findlay, who died in 1742 and his daughter, Margret, who died in 1720. It is inscribed: 'Erected by Margaret Read in memory of her/deceast husband ROBERT FINDLAY who sometime/lived in Tolmants who departed this life in the year/1742 aged 60 years. Also his daughter Margret/who departed this life in the year 1720 aged 1 year/All who pass by, behold, survie/Think on this afull stone/hers moistie bons and broken skuls/and graves all over green/But where these souls thos dethless things/that left these bodies her?/Ise do not give answer but reffer/til Christ our Lord appeir'.
