Scope and Content Gravestone of David Wood, Maryton Parish Church and Churchyard, Angus This stone features two winged souls, although only one person is buried here. They represent the spirit ascending to Heaven after death. The souls have childlike faces and wings incised with feathers. Between the souls is a rosette, which symbolises paradise. The childlike souls and choice of text on this monument reflect the young age of the deceased. Winged souls are generally depicted as ageless and sexless, but some may be interpreted as portraits, especially those shown wearing periwigs, a fashionable item in the 18th century. This gravestone commemorates David Wood, who died in 1775. It is inscribed: 'this stone was erected by/James Wood in Nether Dysart/in memory of his son DAVID/WOOD who died Jany, 4th 1775/in infancy', 'Jesus Said Suffer Little Children/And forbid them not to come/Unto me for of Such is the/Kingdom of Haven Math XIX'. The Bible text is from Matthew 19:14. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
