Scope and Content View of cottages at Upper Carnoch, Glen Coe The group of cottages in this photograph are situated on the bank of the River Coe, at the north-eastern end of Glen Coe. They are good examples of Scottish vernacular architecture, with drystone walls and thatched roofs. The cottage in the centre of the photograph appears to be built into a slight slope: this, together with its rounded corners, would have provided protection from the wind. Glen Coe is a popular tourist destination, noted for outstanding natural beauty and good hillwalking routes. However, in 1692 it was the site of a massacre when a group of MacDonalds were murdered by Campbells, as punishment for not declaring loyalty to King William. This event is commemorated by a memorial in Glencoe village. This photograph of a group of cottages was taken by Lady Henrietta Gilmour Montrose, one of the first recorded female photographers in Scotland. She took this photograph in 1899, during a family holiday in north-west Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
