Scope and Content Harbour front, Kirkwall, Orkney Islands This is Harbour Street, Kirkwall, looking onto the harbour basin. To the far left is the Kirkwall Hotel, which dates to 1890. Designed by a local architect, T S Peace (1844-1934), the four-storeyed building is constructed in local stone and has mansard roofs and dormered windows. The long low building to the far right of the street is the Girnel, which dates to the 17th century. Built of rubble, with two storeys and an attic, it was used as the storehouse for grain. A double forestair leads to the first floor. The house immediately to its left is the Girnel Keeper's house which dates to 1643, and behind can be seen the medieval tower of St Magnus Cathedral. Orkney, which lies about 9 km north of Scotland, consists of a group of around 70 islands, 20 of which are inhabited. The biggest island is known as Mainland. Three-quarters of the population of the islands live on Mainland and it is also where the two towns, Kirkwall and Stromness, are situated. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
