Scope and Content Castle Campbell, Clackmannan, from north-west This view, from the north-west, taken in the early 20th century, shows the entrance front of the castle, with the 15th-century tower on the left, and the gatehouse and north and west courtyard walls, all of late 16th-/early 17th-century date, on the right. To the rear are the ruins of the south range, dating from the late 15th/early 16th century. Castle Campbell was a house of the Earls of Argyll, who developed it into a gracious residence, as well as a stronghold. It was apparently burned in 1654, but was partly repaired, and remained inhabited until at least the late 19th century. It was given into State care in 1948 and is now open to the public by Historic Scotland. Castle Campbell stands on a promontory between two burns, on the southern slopes of the Ochil Hills, which may have been the site of an earth and timber castle in the 12th century. The present stone castle was built in stages in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
