Scope and Content Photographic copy of elevations, section and plans of Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries & Galloway These drawings, made by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland in 1914, show the castle as it then existed. The bottom three drawings are surveys, and the top two are conjectural reconstructions of the inner side of the gatehouse in the 15th century, and in about 1500. Caerlaverock Castle is unique in Scotland in being laid out on a triangular plan. The distinctive gatehouse is substantially of the late 13th century. The west wing was rebuilt in the late 15th century as guest accommodation, and the east and south wings, known as the Nithsdale Apartments, date from about 1634. Caerlaverock Castle was a stronghold of the Maxwells, wardens of the West March (the western boundary between Scotland and England) in the later Middle Ages. The first castle here was built in the early 13th century, but was supplanted in the 1270s by the earliest part of the present building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
