Scope and Content Aberdour Castle, Fife, from north-west This is a view from the north-west, taken in about 1900, shows part of the north front of the east range of Aberdour Castle. The projection on the left contains a spiral stair. The second-floor window to its right has been converted into a door, probably to allow the building to be used as a warehouse. The pitch of the roof has been lowered, as seen by the higher level of the crowstepped gable on the left. This section of the building dates from about 1635, and was built for William, 6th Earl of Morton. It has a full-length gallery, with painted wooden ceiling, and on the ground floor a store on the west and a stable on the east. The lowering of the roof probably dates from about 1800. The oldest part of Aberdour Castle is a 14th-century tower on a rhomboidal plan, which was extended to the east in the 16th and 17th centuries. To the south are the remains of a terraced garden, with a beehive dovecot, and to the east of that is a walled bowling green. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
