Scope and Content Aerial view of Parliament site, Edinburgh, from east This photograph, taken in 2001, shows the cluster of assembly buildings beginning to reach full height. Their distinctive shapes were designed by the architect, Enric Miralles, to resemble a group of upturned boats. Beyond the assembly buildings, the structure covered in scaffolding is the seventeenth-century Queensberry House, and the long building nearing completion is offices for the MSPs. Substantial redevelopment of the Holyrood area has taken place since the late 20th century. This was once a largely industrial part of the city, with breweries and a gas holder station once located here. Indeed, at the beginning of the 20th century, one quarter of beer consumed in Scotland was brewed in this small area. The new Scottish Parliament is situated at the end of the Royal Mile, near Holyrood Palace. The site was chosen in 1998, after a number of locations around Edinburgh were considered. Building work began the following year, in the summer of 1999. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
