Scope and Content Train leaving Cathcart Station, Glasgow This shows the 8.02am departure from Cathcart to Glasgow Central, round the Outer Circle, on 26 May 1962, en route to Langside Station. The locomotive, a 4MT 2-6-4 tank engine, and coach are both of London, Midland & Scottish Railway design. This photograph was taken shortly before steam suburban services on the south side of Glasgow were supplanted by electric trains. The locomotive is one of a class that dominated these services from about 1950 to the end of steam, and the coach is equally typical of the period. This section of railway line is part of the second section of the Cathcart District Railway, opened in 1894 from Cathcart to Pollokshields West, which completed the Cathcart Circle, the first section of which had opened in 1886 as Glasgow's first south-side suburban line.
