Scope and Content Buchanan Street Station, Glasgow, from east-south-east This shows the north-east end of the station from the east-south-east, on 27 May 1964, with the 1.35pm Glasgow-Inverness train leaving, hauled by one of the last British Railways standard 5MT 4-6-0s, a class introduced in 1951. The station's carriage sidings are on the right. Buchanan Street Station was closed in November 1966, and has been demolished. The train services using it were re-routed to Queen Street Station. In comparison with the other Glasgow terminals, Buchanan Street was little used. This station was opened in 1849 by the Caledonian Railway, which had taken over the Glasgow, Garnkirk & Coatbridge Railway, which had initiated its construction. It was rebuilt in the 1930s by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
