Scope and Content Aeroplane at Glasgow Airport, Abbotsinch, Renfrewshire This view from the west, taken on 11 June 1981, shows a Britten-Norman Trislander aircraft on the west side of the pier used for taking passengers to and from aircraft. The hangar in the background was probably part of HMS Sanderling. The Trislander was a development of the very successful twin-engined Islander, and was a little tail heavy when on the ground, hence the frame work supporting the tail in this view. This aircraft was used for scheduled flights to Islay in 1981. Glasgow Airport was originally a Royal Naval Air Service station, known as HMS Sanderling. When Renfrew Airport, Glasgow's first airport, became too small in the late 1960s this station was adapted to civilian use, with a new terminal building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
