Scope and Content Aeroplane at Islay Airport (Port Ellen Airfield), Islay, Argyll & Bute This view shows the plane, at the terminal building. It was built in Belfast by Short Brothers, and is of their SD230 type, designed for take-off and landing from short runways. It is operated by Loganair, an airline set up by a civil engineering contractor in Muir of Ord. In 1981 this type of plane was not used for scheduled services to Islay, which were undertaken by Britten-Norman Trislander aircraft. The SD230 was soon superseded by the larger Short SD360, a development from the 230 with a single rudder and longer fuselage. This plane was a special charter by Invergordon Distillers to take guests back to Glasgow from celebrations to mark the centenary of the foundation of Bruichladdich Distillery. The plane had just landed at Islay Airport, a wartime aerodrome, adapted to civilian purposes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
