Description General view from SE showing basin

Date 5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 796245

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Harbour, Brora, Highland This view from the east-south-east, taken in May 1974, shows the outer basin of the harbour, and the rubble training wall separating the inner basin from the River Brora. In the left background is the chimney of the former colliery, abandoned earlier in 1974, and at one time linked to the harbour by a tramway. This harbour was built primarily for trade, but after the coming of the railway in 1871 this dwindled. It was a fishing centre for a time, but by 1974 was used primarily by small pleasure craft. Brora, at the mouth of the River Brora, rose to prominence because of a small local coalfield, the only one in the Highlands. This was worked from the 16th century. A new harbour was built in 1814, as part of the improvement of the Sutherland estates of the Marquis of Stafford. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
