Scope and Content Harbour, Lerwick, Shetland Islands This view from the south-west, taken on 5 May 1976, shows a vessel at the main steamer pier. Though a roll-on, roll-off vehicular service from Aberdeen had been introduced in 1971, some freight was still handled by a conventional cargo vessel, as seen here. Since 1976 the waterfront at Lerwick has been radically altered to deal with North Sea Oil business, and with ever-larger fishing boats. The basin in this view is now used by small boats. The islands are now supplied entirely by roll-on, roll-off ferries from Aberdeen. Lerwick has a superb natural harbour, protected by the island of Bressay. It was developed in the later 19th century to serve the fishing industry and for steamship services. The Victoria Pier was improved in 1886, and the Albert Wharf in 1889.
