Date 2/1972

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Scope and Content East India Harbour, Greenock, Inverclyde This view from the south-east, taken in February 1972, shows Clyde & West Highland steamers in the harbour for winter refit. In the centre is the TrSS 'Duchess of Hamilton', on the right are the MV 'Clansman' and TSS 'King George V'. Lamonts gave up business in the late 1970s, and the harbour and docks were then allowed to decay, and were informally colonised by local boat-owners. These were expelled in the early 1990s by the Renfrewshire Development Agency, who then reconstructed the quay walls. The East India Harbour in Greenock was constructed in 1805 to designs by John Rennie, with a graving dock off the north-west side. For many years the harbour and graving dock were leased for ship repairing by James Lamont & Son, who added a second graving dock in the 1950s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
