Scope and Content South Kessock Pier, Highland This view from the south-east, taken in August 1965, shows the ferryboat MV 'Eilean Dubh' (Gaelic for Black Isle) at South Kessock pier just after arriving from North Kessock, the village in the background. The vessel is side-loading. This ship was the mainstay of the service for many years, but by 1976 had been relegated to spare boat by the arrival of the MV 'Rosehaugh', which could carry more cars. The opening of the Kessock Bridge in 1982 ended the ferry service, and the 'Rosehaugh' was transferred to the Corran-Ardgour service. The Kessock ferry across the Beauly Firth from Inverness to the Black Isle must have been operating informally for centuries. Thomas Telford built ramped ferry piers at both ends in the early 19th century, and larger ramped piers were constructed in the mid-19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
