Scope and Content Armadale Pier, Highland This view from the north-west, taken on 19 May 1976, shows one of the former Clyde car ferries, the MV 'Bute' at Armadale on a service to Mallaig for which she had been specially adapted in 1975. This was the only reinforced concrete pier of this character in the west Highlands. The MV 'Bute' was withdrawn from the Mallaig-Armadale service in 1979 and replaced by the MV 'Pioneer'. There is still a car ferry from Mallaig to Armadale. This reinforced concrete steamer pier was probably built in the 1920s or 1930s as a replacement for a 19th-century pier, probably timber-piled. From 1964 it was served by a vehicle ferry, initially the MV 'Clansman', as part of a new route to the Outer Isles using Uig, Skye, as the base for crossing the Minch.
