Scope and Content Railway Stations and Piers, Craigendoran, Argyll & Bute This view from the north, taken in June 1972 shows the MV 'Maid of Skelmorlie' approaching the west side of the pier, which is of wood-piled construction, and has four steamer berths. The ship was one of four built in 1952 to replace old steamships. By 1972 Craigendoran was relatively little used, and it was closed at the end of the summer season. The 'Maid of Skelmorlie' was arriving to take a service to Dunoon and Rothesay. Two of her sister ships were converted to car ferries in 1972. This pier was built in 1880-3 by the North British Railway as the base for its fleet of paddle-steamers serving the Clyde estuary, which competed with services operated from Greenock and Gourock by the Glasgow & South Western and Caledonian Railways.
