Scope and Content Steam Crane, Troon Harbour, South Ayrshire This view from the south-west, probably taken in about 1960, by James Anderson, a Newton Mearns garage proprietor, shows a steam coaling crane on the north-east quay of the outer harbour. This rudimentary crane was, judging by the brick base, installed in the late 19th century. This crane was still in use in 1960 for loading small steam coasters, called 'puffers', with coal for shipment to Clyde estuary and West Highland ports. It was scrapped during the 1960s. By 1960 the coal trade of the port, once very extensive, was tiny. Troon Harbour was developed from 1808, initially by the 3rd Duke of Portland, primarily for the shipment of coal. He built the Kilmarnock & Troon Railway, Scotland's first public railway, to transport coal for shipment. The harbour was later improved by the Glasgow & South Western Railway.
